Building Hospitals & Homes

Back

A strong community can’t be established without construction. Although communities are not buildings, you would be hard pressed to have a community without them. Through your donations to the COINS Foundation we are building the infrastructure for successful communities. We focus on schools, hospitals and homes; improving the lives of people living in
the poorest circumstances and offering a chance of a place to live, an education and better health where previously none existed. Together, the construction industry is changing the lives of some of the most vulnerable people in the world.

For over seven years, many in the construction industry, including COINS’ clients, business partners and employees, have been supporting the COINS 3 Peaks Challenge. To date, these events have raised more than £1.8m. By any standards this is a remarkable achievement of which the industry can be justly proud. The COINS Foundation, a separate registered charity, manages and directs these funds to projects in Africa and the home countries where the funds are raised:
the UK, USA and Australia. All running costs of the COINS Foundation and the costs associated with the fund-raising events are sponsored by the COINS business. This means that every single penny raised for the Foundation goes directly to the people who need it most.

Although a great deal of human suffering is prevented and alleviated by direct emergency aid, the COINS Foundation recognises that this will never be the whole answer for the developing world. The Foundation is therefore committed to using your donations to transform aid-dependent groups into thriving, viable, self-sustaining communities.

In 2007/8 we funded the provision of homes for over one thousand vulnerable young people across Zambia, Uganda and Mozambique and we built a new school in Uganda which offers secondary education to six hundred students at full capacity.

This year we will continue to support education in Uganda by building seven more classrooms to accommodate a further four hundred and twenty students across two schools. We will also erect three new classrooms in a school for orphans in
Ndola, Zambia, bringing education to an extra one hundred and eighty children, as well as funding housing for over eleven hundred vulnerable young people in Mozambique and providing health education and other practical measures to those who are at risk from poor sanitation, HIV and malaria.

With the continued support of the construction industry, the COINS Foundation is firmly committed to delivering more practical support to these and other communities in the years to come, making a real difference to the lives of the people that benefit from our funding.
