Research has shown that in all but the most extreme of cases, that the most efficient and cost-effective proportion of the supply base is reached when the proportion of Preferred Suppliers is somewhere between 2.5% and 5.0% of the total supply base, or between 25 to 50 suppliers per 1,000 suppliers used. In addition, these efficiencies are further improved when the lion share of the spend; somewhere in excess of 80% is placed with these Preferred (T1 and T2) suppliers. There is a direct correlation between the size of the supply base and the proportion of that supply base that are Preferred Suppliers, and the ability of the procurement professionals to deliver procurement efficiencies and savings in operational cost.
