Could your big idea transform the construction industry? Enter it into the COINS Construction Industry Grand Challenge for the chance to win R&D support, cash grants, professional development prizes, paid internships and work experience packages.
Consisting of three challenges focused on new and emerging technologies, sustainability and leadership, the COINS Construction Industry Grand Challenge is split into two competitions: Open (aged 18+) and Undergraduate students. Competition winners can gain career enhancing opportunities and funding towards further education.
Open competition prizes include paid internships, cash professional development prizes and the opportunity of taking their idea forward as part of Bouygues UK corporate R&D programme, whilst undergraduates can win cash education grants, paid internships and work experience placements.

The COINS Construction Industry Grand Challenge provides a platform for today’s brightest and inspired minds to present their idea to leading construction companies, private investors, venture capitalists and academics.
“Entering the competition with a winning idea can not only help to revolutionise the construction industry but also your career path! It’s a chance to showcase yourself and your ideas, see your concept developed further and gain valuable knowledge and insight from industry insiders.
“This is the second year of the COINS Construction Industry Grand Challenge. Following the success of last year’s event and the quality of its entries, we’ve expanded the competition and we’re looking forward to seeing more inspiring entries in 2016.”
Winner of a 2015 challenge, Hermione Crease, Co-founder of PurrMetrix, said, “The Grand Challenge was a great opportunity for us to meet industry experts, potential customers and test out our ideas with them. Winning has been a real boost for our credibility.”
The COINS Construction Industry Grand Challenge will be judged by an international panel of industry experts and entrepreneurs, including Ian Heasman, Director of Sustainability from Taylor Wimpey UK Ltd, Oliver Novakovic, Technical and Innovation Director of Barratt Developments plc, Aleksandra Njagulj, Head of Sustainability, R&D and Innovation (SRDI) at Bouygues UK and Brian Lane, CEO of Comfort Systems USA.
Special prizes, in addition to those for each challenge, include the Bouygues UK Special Discretionary R&D Prize and COINS Software Innovation Prizes. The COINS Software Innovation prizes offer the winner a three month internship and the runner-up a two week work placement with COINS research and development to further develop their ideas and career prospects.
The competition opens for entries on the 1 st September and the deadline for all submissions is 16 th December 2016. To enter the competition, Open Competition candidates must answer a series of questions surrounding their innovative idea, whilst undergraduates must submit an 800-word essay. Successful shortlisted candidates form both competitions will then be required prepare and present a ten-minute presentation at the final awards ceremony in London.
